i am thinking of building an inground pond for my lmb, sunfish, and bullhead cats: the dimensions are going to be 7' longX 3' wideX 2.5' deep, or 8' longX 4' wideX 2.5-3' deep, or should i make it more shallow for better veiwing

my gfs parents had a pond but birds and raccoons and opossums would always steal the fish and get in there and move plants around etc.. i dont know what kind of area you live in but you could make it as shallow as you want just put a metal screen cover over the top if you have to

i say deeper because it will be more stable it will stay a lower temp(better for your fish) and your fish has a better chance of survile if there are asnimals to eat you fish.

as long as you have a good filter you could probly see up to 6ft+

well i alredy thought of the racoons, i was going to put a fence around it
for veiwing i was thinking of putting sand in the bottom to see the fish better

You will see Sunfish and bullheads all the time. I rarely see any of my LMB or SMB. They like to hang out at the drop off, waiting for the little fish to swim out over them. If you build the pond, make a drop off. Make it in the center just go about 1-2 feet deeper with a vertical drop. If the pond is shallow you will still be able to see the bass but they will stay deeper.

If you want fish you can see all of the time, I would recommend koi, cats, and bullheads. They like to be fed. I have been tank raising alot of my bass, perch, and sunfish lately. Those seem to come out to feed and don't mind the pellet food. Fish that I caught from lake O and local rivers go into the pond never to be heard from again.

For me the Grey Heron is a really big problem. They can eat 8-12" fish a couple at a time. I don't want to put up any defenses because the pond is too big so I have been tank raising until they get to about 14".

My outdoor pond is above ground 8'X12'X3' deep, and I do not have any problem with racoons or birds. I made it deep because my dad had problems with racoons herons & a Redtailed hawk. He changed how the fence for his dog and the dog keeps everyone away. Its a huskey so it does not like water. My dogs are labs which is another reason I went with a above ground pond. They love water.
