I have a 3 inch largemouth. The little guy is freakin awesome! I feed him small feeder minnows and crickets now, any suggestions on other types of food? I want him to be healthy. Also wondering what is a compatable cleaner/sucker fish he will get along with.

mine eat redworms, cut up night crawlers, and frozen bloodworms.
I know they will also take pellets or freeze dried foods too if you teach them to. the earlier you start the better

a pleco and a small 4"+ bluegill to get him accustomed to eating pellets. its the "natuaral" way to get them eating pellets

Thanks that sounds good. If i start feeding pellets its still alright to throw a couple live fish in to show off to people right?

i dont think LMB can be trained off of live food, just trained onto other foods. I think they will always instinctually strike smaller weaker fish.
just be sure to quarantine, and use a "healthy" food choice, ie: no goldfish

Do you have pics of him? That would be awesome. I would think any quality food, maybe shrimp or fish fillets will help you get him to eat something other than live. Maybe if you go to that the progression to pellets would be so hard. I would love to keep a LMB someday, I think they are just awesome!

yea when i find a camera ill put up some pics. What is the best way to teach them to eat pellets? and what is a "healthy" live fish to feed?

I dont think there really is a healthy live feeder. The potential to carry disease is so high that I would be afraid of the LMB getting some parasite or something. Crickets are good as far as I know, earth worms, any worm probably.

I have heard of getting a fish that already eats pellets is a great way to teach them. I think starting young is the key. I will be looking forward to the pics!

like stated before, a bluegill will help him eat pellets by watching him eat infront of his face will make him eat sooner or later. as for feeders, unless you live in the south and have an outdoor pond or an indoor pond there will be no way to quarantine enough food for a lmb
