The clicking noise is caused by the grinding of the pharyngeal teeth. They will often make this noise while they are eating. I have also personally seen a B. Modesta use the sound as a defense mechanism to scare off another fish. In my opinion, one of the coolest part of owning loaches is dropping in some cichlid pellets or some mussels and listening them cause a racket in their feeding frenzy.

The clicking is really cool. I just got my first clowns a couple months ago and they are my first loach species I've heard click. Right now since I'm at school, my dad is taking care of the feeding and I go home to do the major maintenance on the tanks. I realized not to long ago that I didn't warn him about the clicking. I've heard of many inexperienced keepers being concerned about their glass cracking or something the first time they hear the clicks, so I'm just waiting for a call from my dad saying he thinks their 75 gallon is breaking lol

ive never heard my CL click. is there a chance that he will click more if he has a few buddies?

My 5 do it a lot while eating, especially when they get a hold of frozen foods like beef heart and bloodworms. I don't know if more would cause yours to click or not

Yea my big guys do it all the time, and im pretty sure they do it while destroying my drift wood (at least i think its them). Id here the clicking at night and wake up the next day with huge pcs of driftwood broken off.

Algae wafers and pellets. If they are on feeding frenzy, they click. If you have tiger loaches that clash around a lot, expect loud clicking noises. This annoyed some people around my house.lol
