Watching the clown loaches doing quiet pre-breakfast social & rummaging clown stuff in the office tank:

One will flash on a bamboo next to others (primarily the heavy girl), another will sniff that spot & flash similarly. They're rubbing/flashing in the same spot, like dogs in the park will pee, sniff & then sometimes over-pee. Smallest "runt" is not flashing, just hanging-out in the same spot. No clicking nor specific interactions, just relaxed with an occasional nudge. Maybe they're also also diggin' the Beastie Boys.
Too many questions, too few grad-students...

NB & before you ask: the water's reasonably new, though I'll accept that this may be irritation and there's an appropriately rough-scratchy point on the bamboo.
I'd try for a video but there's no way they'll stay so relaxed when I move - breakfast time.

Seems very unique. Never heard of this happening before, so updates would be much appreciated.

me neither, but how often do we get a minute to just sit & watch?
I love this time of year... I'm just sitting here with my music doing a little plan-sketching for 2022 - a glorified version of navel-gazing, appropriate for keeping one eye on the aquarium's goings-on.
The aro can see me & is giving the evil-eye... it'll soon be b'fast time, and end to this lovely calm.

Academically, fish are massively under-studied beyond commercial exploitations (food), particularly social interactions & similar
capacities - it's just not sexy. Also, who wants to know that codfish feel stress & pain and die in agony by slowly drowning - I do love having that conversation with a "moral" pescatarian or C&R fisherman, though ;)
