Oh yeah I almost forgot. Change LOTS of water.
 
if a loach is pale, is it because it doesnt feel comfy, or is it that sometimes they are just naturally pale and cant change to a darker color? i have a 2"er thats always pale and have never seen him dark, but i think he can but he doesnt feel comfy
 
Basically you want to elimate stressors and make sure nutrition is good. A great way to eliminate stress in shoaling fish is to have a large shoal. My loaches have improved in color with their improved diet and larger shoal. They are also more active and seem to be more resistant to disease.
