Honestly, for that, I would try to get loaches at the 3-4 inch range so they don't end up as food for the faster growing ornate bichir. Honestly, this should not be a problem at all and loaches are GREAT for clean up.
Yep, but be careful. Keeping the bichirs well few will reduce the chance of predation, but ornates can fit a surprisingly large fish in their mouth when hungry. I've lost a couple of good sized CL's to my large ornate while I've been on holiday and the bichir hasn't been fed for a week or so.
