Was looking to get local fish in a 55g. From what I was told, I won't need a heater I take. Are fish like bluegill, sunfish, brim very messy. Wondering if I need to over filtrate the water

this doesnt belong in the media lounge, but i can try to answer your question. you dont need a heater for sunfish, but mine grew faster and was healthier with one. are they messy? depends on how much you feed them and how often you do water changes, but yes, they are pretty messy eaters. if you are planning on keeping one in a 55g, you probably want good filtration on there. however i do advise that you get a larger tank if you plan on keeping it for life. They get up to 16 inches and it is recommended to get a large tank to keep them.

hope this helps

no they wouldnt, they get pretty big, usually around 20" and they are built for speed. they need open water to swim in and colder water than largemouth. they are also very aggressive and territorial and it would NEVER be ok to keep smallmouth bass in a 55g. they need at least a 180g

reguardless be double on filtration and i would get a heater. The natives will survive without it tho maybe

my choices are crappie, sunnies, and yellow/white perch.

i used to have all of thee above in a 56 along with a lmb and smb but they were only 3"s

There are a bunch of sunfish species. The species in the groups below can generally live with other species in their group, but you have to be more careful mixing species from different groups. Even within groups you need to be mindful of aggression; provide lots of cover and visual barriers in the tank, and either stock all males, all females, or a high ratio of females to males.

You shouldn't need a heater. More filtration is always better.

BIG SUNFISH (too big for a 55):
Bluegill
Redear
Any crappie or black bass

MID-SIZED SUNFISH- More Aggressive:
Pumpkinseed
Green
Redbreast
Dollar
Longear (some individuals)
Rock Bass

MID-SIZED SUNFISH- Less Aggressive:
Redspotted
Spotted
Warmouth
Longear (some individuals)
Flier

SMALLER SUNFISH:
Bantam
Orangespotted

VERY SMALL SUNFISH:
Banded
Blackbanded
Bluespotted

So I do. Man, I should just quit.

Fixed now. Redears (shellcrackers) are too big for a 55. Redbreasts are managaeable.

my red spotted sunnie is pretty mean, will not tolerate any other fish, nor will it allow plants to become rooted (it relocates them constantly)

I have tried several times over the past two years to put catfish, and other sunfish in the tank and it has never worked out.

Most sunfish have about the same mentality as Oscar's, and are of equal intelligence, some smarter or dumber (for example they can be trained to eat most prepared foods easily, they will quickly get to know who feeds them, recognize food containers etc)
