I'm out and hiking away, seeking the elusive aquarium rock, then I see it; River sand!! Think it's ok to use this for my Shellies and other Cichlids??:)

Id totally do it. You could boil it if you wanted to but I would just give it a good rinse and get all the floating and organic debris out of it.

where have you been hiking? i have used a lot of rocks found in the colorado mountains, but never found much good sand. i think it would be ok to use- i would get a sifter an some sort of large tupperware to clean through it. or if you want a fairly cheap option go to the rio grande company located at 4th an sante fe and get 3m color quartz. where are you finding this colorado sand?

i would boil it and go for it

Colorado sand is fun to hunt! It's usually along the river where it had pooled, curved deeply, or on the bottom flow. This sand was in your backyard, as far back west of the Res that you can go. Beyond the beaver ponds.
what's 3m color quartz??
Boiling ok but sifting? Me no thinks me could. I wouldn't know what I was sifting for unless it were sparkly & gold colored. Lol

YMCMB... LUV YR FISHY ICON!! I want discus fishus someday.

Sweet!
