What's a good food for a logperch (percina caprodes)? I just got one and I feed my natives in the tank frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. I haven't really seen him competing for the food like the others since he hangs out mostly on the bottom. Is there some kind of sinking natural food that would get to him better? I want to gain more experience with darters since I want to set up an all darter 55 gallon around August. He sure is a neat specimen though about 5". I'll try to get some pics up after the weekend.

Logperch will eat those foods. They also like bottom-crawling live foods such as blackworms, scuds, and isopods. They are not aggressive enough to compete well for food with minnows, sunfish, etc., especially when new to a tank. Try distracting the other fish with food placed at one end of the tank, then deliver some food to the logperch's favorite spot with a turkey baster.

I tried melting the cube of frozen bloodworms before putting them int he tank today and he seemed to do better with all the worms floating around. I'll have to try the turkey baster thing though. Sounds like that would be the most effective method to help him get his fair share.

On the NANFA webite I read about one guy feeding his logperch blackworms that he was growing in the sand in one part of his tank, this and he also had a 10 gallon he grew scuds in for them to eat. Pfliegers "fishes of Missouri" says that longperch also eat snails....just something to consider.
