Recently my friend in Portugal sent me some fish to a hotel, including a "friedrichsthalii" I ordered from him.

It turned out to be a loisellei and I'm pleased. I've never seen one for sale in the UK, and it's a really pretty fish with a cool character. I prefer it to friedrichs. It's one of my favourite fish I currently have now.

I gather they are similar in temperament etc, just different looks. I prefer the more intricate patterning on my male loisellei.

Agreed. Loisellei are great fish. My male loisellei has a nice, beefy look, and he is very outgoing. Lots of personality on these fish.

I've bought about four friedrichsthaliis--all of which turned out to be loisellei. So, I've only kept loisellei. I'm still hoping to find a freddy one day, but I think they are much rarer than loisellei here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I also keep motaguense, which is my favorite of the loisellei/mota/freddy.

if you like loises. you might wanna take a look at salvinis also...

I bought a freddy that turned out to actually be a loisellei. Amazing personality, even at 3". I'd like to get another, but only when it has its own tank. Mine I had in a "cichlid community" and I came back after a 4-day weekend to find him dead. My best guess is that he picked a fight be couldn't win and I'll never know what killed him, but he picked fights with everything, including my java fern. Beautiful little firecracker, though.

post pics of your loisellei please:D
