I'm aware that geophagus and gymnos are best kept in groups of 3+, but I was wondering what people's experiences were keeping a lone geophagus with other species of fish. I'm also curious if anyone keeps a handful of single species of eartheaters in the same tank.

I have kept one Geophagus surinamensoid sp. with several Juruparoid eartheaters.
He became extremely agressive, but I believe that most of the Surinamensis complex are very aggressive fish.

I've found that the lone Eartheaters tend to become more aggressive. In my opinion, the main reason for having larger groups of each species is to spread aggression, as Geophagus tend to target their own type more often than any other species.

my 4 geo surinamensis are not at all agressive.
i also have 2 satanoperca jurupari
i too, believe that with geos the more geos present, the agression gets spread around (they are cichlids)

never kept geos/satanoperca/gymnogeos alone so i would like to know what happens agression wise when you keep one by itself.

What about conspecifics? (ie-would 1x altifrons, 1x proxima, 1x surinamensis, etc thrive together) I'm finding myself torn between the geophagus species, the subtle differences are all very appealing.
