My bass has killed two of his tankmates over the past 6 months both bluegills. The second bluegill just died today and now he is all alone. Has anyone out there ever had this happen to a bass? I want to put another bluegill in but the water in CT is not warm enough yet to catch bluegills. Do you think he will make it by himself until April or do I need to put something in there?

It will be find you might till then.:grinno: You might want to try a bullhead instead. How big is the tank? If it killed a bluegill what makes you think it won't kill another? Sounds like the bass was territorial seeings how you didn't say anything about it being eatin. The bass will be fine being alone.

The bass is not lonely. He's shown his feelings by killing tankmates. It's just in their nature. The only thing he might leave alone (in my experience) is some type of catfish.

it's his fault his alone ...hehe anyway good luck on deciding on a new tank mate.

I agree with everyone else, a Catfish would be suitable. I would advice though since you said he is 14 inches long that you get yourself a catfish around the same size otherwise he'll beat on him as well. This is why my tank is currently peaceful right now because my Channel Cat is 9 inches and my Largemouth Bass is 5 inches and the Bluegill is 6 inches.

****Always keep the prey slightly bigger than the predator****

Not to say that they will live happily ever after, but you dont have to worry about your bluegill getting killed or eaten for that matter.

Quit honestly , my Bluegill is ballsy! He always gets in the LMB face and taunts him. The LMB gets upset and starts doing a little war dance moving from side to side opening his mouth wide open and the Bluegill just looks at him and sits there until the LMB leaves. Trust me a lot of Bluegills or Sunfish in general are not easy punks. They stand their grounds when they have to.:headbang2

My bluegill got his ass handed to him by a firemouth of equal size...though that fire mouth is a jerk and remains so to this day. (Note: the firemouth was the new fish in the tank)

i have experienced the same type of situation only with bass also just a little smaller than my only lasting fish. the only tank mate that it didnt destroy is a pleco. i have put in channel cat that werer larger and he beat it till i had to remove it. but now thier together in a larger tank 100gal. but i place the cat first to get its territory. it working fine now. but for the 6" blue cat its not just the larger 10" albino channel. good luck!
