Hi,

couple months back i had a problem with the fluval 404. I thought it was an easy fix. Just replace the impeller ceramic shaft. I finally got it replaced last weekend. Tried to fire it up. Wouldnt work. tried putting in more water so it get syphon, still doesnt work. Tried tilting it..it started leaking...boo...What is wrong? Please help me. Thanks in advance!

Could be different things, I was looking for advice on my 404 too (how I found this thread). In my case I got it used over a year ago it's gotten a tad noisy so I was thinking about getting new impeller blades. Few months back I broke one of the clips on the impeller cover, odd thing is it's still working the same as before.

Oh yeah, the point was that I had a lot of trouble getting it started the first time. Had to fill the canister with water (couple gallon jugs works) to get it going. Next step if that didn't work was to remove all air from the hoses (unhook from tank and use gravity to fill with water), can't remember if I had to or not. But now every time I go to restart I carry to where it goes, fill mostly with water, put lid on (leaving the hose part off), top off with more water, put valve thing with hoses back on. That's eliminated my problem with it starting.

Is the canister is leaking?, was that with everything put back together and aqua stop valve thing in place? Cause sometimes a little water is on the outside of the seal when the aqua stop valve is up back into place. Or the seal ring may need replaced. I'd look about and figure out where the water is coming from, before getting too excited.

It's been a few days, I hope everything is alright. Let me know if this helped at all.

This is why I stopped using fluvals and switched to Renas. Not only are they a pain to get started at times, they dont always seem to get as solid a seal as they should and you have to keep opening and closing it until it seals. Plus some of the plastic is just not durable. The Renas seem more user friendly and will be easier for my wife to manage.
