What will be the long and short term affects on the health of a female motoro stingray kept in hard water, with pH 7.0 used on new water added to the tank, and also kept on gravel rather than sand?

based on experience and anecdotal evidence ( from other ray hobbyists) rays
can thrive on different ph levels . There have been cases of motoros breeding in 8 ph water!

The key to a rays health is excellent water quality ( water changes and more water changes ) , stable water parameters and a stress free environment.

dont forget a good diet :D

Consistancy is the key. They will do great once acclimated to alot of different water types, but if you have changes they can have problems.

also make sure the ray is in good health when you buy them one of the biggest problems is people buy fresh imported rays and have trouble getting them to feed

agreed . A lot rides on getting healthy rays to begin with. Proper acclimation is also very important as a healthy ray can quickly deteriorate if not acclimated properly.

Rays along with other more obvious pollutants are more sensitive to nitrates than most fish.We live in a heavy farming area and decided against keeping them because our tap water can be up to 35ppm.
