Hello
Any of you guys running the fx5 for longer than 4-5 (several) years? (it came out in like...2006 i believe?)

I am about to pull the trigger on an fx5 but i worry about long term reliability

i am going to pick up another filter for my 140 gallon that only has an eheim 2217 currently

I was either going to pick up a fx5 or another 2217. i appreciate the higher flow rate of the fx5 and that it agitates the surface of the water well, whereas the 2217 flow rate is low but eheim is very dependable

Thanks

price is a concern for me

i will be buying an eheim 2217 on amazon for 160 or a fluval fx5 on amazon for 211 + cost of media (around 40-50 i am guessing)

is the fluval fx5 worth the additional $100?

the larger eheim 2260 or 2262 is out of my budget range, i see all of them go for around 350-500

Coincidentally, the two canister filters in my house are an FX5 and a 2217. I bought both new.

I like that the eheim comes with media, is quiet, and obviously the classic series has earned a reputation for reliability. However, the flow is REALLY weak. FX5 doesn't have that issue. ;)

Media for the FX5 is not that expensive if you shop around. I've had mine for several years now.

Having owned a 2217 for a few years, When it came time to upgrade I went to FX5 the Eheim it seemed lost alot of flow after a few months regardless of cleaning. I could not be happier with my FX5, and for the price of one of the larger Eheims, you can get 2 FX5s.

Not 4 or 5 years yet for me, but I've had mine running for over 2.5 years so far without ever having any issues. My only complaint so far has been how time-consuming it is to clean compared to my XP4 (i'm not a fan of having to take all 3 media baskets out at once to rinse them out).

Agreed fx5 is a pain to clean I have 2 fx5's running for about 2 years and they are great. no issues.

fx5 all the way. I got all my ceramic rings from Charlie and the Fish Tank Factory. Was like $3/lbs compared to like $10/pound for fluval biomedia at petsmart.
