I was at the only local owned per store today on my lunch break. I e been buying from this guy for at least twenty years. He gave me the heads up that starting Monday he begins the liquidation of his business. 25 years he's been here selling fish and small pets. Ever since a chain store came to town he just hasn't been able to keep up. It's really too bad, he is very knowledgable but too many people are drones. I know it happens all the time to small businesses. It's still sad

such is the nature of corporate take over of the economy. Reallly to bad that people are for the most part sheeple!

And the really sad thing is most of the chain store employees know almost nothing. A bunch of HS kids that should be working at Sonic (no offence anyone). Never ceases to amaze me the crap they will push on unsuspecting novice hobbyist and kids. They do a lot to hurt the hobby. A friend of mine started a planted tank a while back and went to a chain store to get his garden started. After a couple months he was totally distressed that many of his plants were withering away. When I went and took a look at his tank, we quickly discovered that most of the species were not true aquatics. They set people up to fail.

That totally sucks bro. A big one in my area shut down a year or so ago. My mother in law said her dad used to take her there when she was small. Sucks to lose a store with that kind of history.

Sure does,we have lost all of our good, longtime stores in this town the past few years. One of the remaking stores has become more of a PetSmart wannabe type of place.

I feel you on that situation! Here where I stay we used to have several mom and pop pet shops. Then the big two came and then Wallyworld brought out their fish tanks. I worked at one of the stores for 13 years before it shut down for that exact situation. At these small stores you could get some variety from time to time but now all these chain stores sell is bread and butter fishes mostly tetras, goldfishes and livebearers. I hope if and when the economy picks up that small businesses will pop back up like weeds.

It's happening everywhere, including 2 stores in my town. Sucks
