Been away doing my exams, and hiding from the new MFK layout. :nilly:

Since I've been gone....I've done nothing to my tank, except put a black background on it and rearranged the rocks. I still have Killer, my serial murderer damsel, in the tank and he's fine....

I did get a koralia nano powerhead rated at 425gph, and it doesn't seem to be pushing much water at all...Nowhere near 425gph I would have thought. So I'll probably get a 750 evo and call that a done deal...

Then I have my light which I have yet to order. As soon as I get my results from my exams and I see a few A's on there, I'll have a bit of cash and I'll get that then ;)

Basically just an update on things, and please give me inspiration for my stocklist...
As soon as I get this other powerhead and light I'm sticking in a few shrooms and soft corals, and I really don't want killer as my only inhabitant. I came to you guys before and asked if I could add any other fish with him and the answer was basically a no, but I'm not sure if I asked about bottom dwelling fish, gobies, blennies etc.

If I rearranged the rocks, took Killer out for a day into a tub or something, added a few other fish like a goby and maybe a clown that I've been eyeing at my LFS, and then put killer back in, would that work? Maybe? Possibly?

If this thread seems useless, I do have an actual question. I've only had my lights on each day for about 6 hours because if I have it on for a normal 10-12hr period, a lot of red slimy algae (?) starts to grow on the sides and the sand. I had never brought it up because I thought it was coralline algae, but it's not. Any ideas on what it could be and how to fix it?

Cheers

Well to answer the "serious" question - You have cyano bacteria.

You should consider running some chemical media to remove phosphates to get rid of that, having more flow in the areas where it is accumulating doesnt hurt either.

I found that the addition of an airstone to my tank also helped to drive off cyano...but that might have just been a coincidence.

Killer I think will always rule the tank. A lot of bottom dwellers are peaceful, shy, reclusive fish...and wouldnt fare well sharing a tank with a large, dominant damsel like killer.

Good to see you back on the forums...I slowed down for finals as welll.

Ok..How would you suggest going about treating it? I just took my hob filter off, because it had nothing in it, and it was just pushing water around. I don't really want to hang anything off the back and there's no room for a sump. So, would regular water changes with RO water and scrubbing hold it off at least?

You shouldnt even need to scrub...you can just suck it off the substrate using airline tubing.

You have to lower your phosphates in your water...so you could run some phosguard in the HOB filter.

Water changes with RODI water should also help.

Alright. Thanks, it's good to see a friendly face around here. Seems like you're the only one on the salt forum now

Yea...not cool man. It took me a lot of hard work to get this place up and humming.

Then when I had finals I dropped out for awhile...and it seems as if everyone else followed.

We lost Kevin it looks like...Heathd got busy...and some business trips (on another one now I believe) and nonstophoops apparently cant log in after the upgrade to the site...

:nilly: That's crazy haha

Btw, would you have thought my damsel would be ok with a cleaner shrimp or two?

I'm going out soon and I'm going to be at the store...So I wanted to pick something up for the tank. Haven't added anything new for about 6 months
