Recently ive had a question that i really been wondering.Could a longnose gar live in a tank without a heater?Because they often winter under ice in colder areas.Oh i don't have a gar YET! Thanks for reading!

Yes they can live without a heater.

we never can compare ours tanks to the wild
but about the heater i am not sure

they should be fine in an unheated tank...although you may notice slower growth than you would in a heated tank.

it should be fine
mine is just fine without one and i have had it for about a month

10" longnose gar is the only fish in my 55 gl tank right now but i getting more soon

before getting more, i'd suggest looking into a bigger tank...longnoses are some of the least flexible gars given their longer snout...combine that with pretty skittish behavior and too small of a tank is a recipe for disaster...just a head's up.

and yes, longnose gars will do just fine without a heater--

you shouldnt need a heater, but its good to have one and set it for low temps, just to avoid ick. They can be kept outdoors, i resently stocked one in a pond near me to solve a sunfish problem. And i have caught them in lakes in new york state so the certianly can handle some cold temps.
