I understand that in the wild longnose gars can grow to upwards of 5 ft. But how big do they get in captivity, and does anybody have any pics of their longnose gars? Also, approx. how fast do they grow?

I believe 2-3 feet in captivity, but it takes a long time in captivity for them to get over the 2 foot mark, maybe 2-3 years. I think they get up to 20 inches in the first year or two. Maybe the Gar experts can chime in on this. here is a pic of one of my three longnose. They are on Hikari Food sticks, Azoo food sticks, market shrimp, and frozen talapia (sp???).

Are you looking to buy one?

that is a great looking longnose!

regarding their growth...YOY frequently reach 16" in their first year in captivity, and can easily grow larger. they seem to plateau a bit at 18-20". given observations by Polypterus and myself, males (or what are highly likely males) should stay around that size give or take a few more inches, while females are the sex that will continue to grow larger.

personally, i've never seen nor kept a longnose gar that was over 20" in the home aquaria, but i'm sure some are out there. 3' would be a monster and quite the outlier (IMO) for home aquaria.

hope that helps--

Yes I picked one up the other day. I will post pics later.

From Jojo right? If that is where it was from then it was one of the four I traded in for an Aba aba knife. Knife died about 3-4 days after I bought it. I have the three others on food sticks, frozen talapia, and market shrimp.

Yup looks like the one I traded in. If you can get it to come to the surface and look for food it should be fairly simple to get it on pellets, which is less of a hassle. How big is he now? The three I have are all around 8-9 inches now.

Because I would have paid more for the aba aba than the Longnose. Different parts of the world have different prices on fish. I'm fairly sure back east, in the US, you can get Long nose gars twice as big for $10. There was a special for 8-11inch Long nose for $13.00 on one site.
