Longnose x alligator gar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd like to up the inquiry, been thinking of getting one. I saw from an on-line seller selling these beauties and it was said there that it is 16" long.

Any advice for a noob getting one these fish? I've been into Cichlids for quite a while and would like to try out different variety. TIA.

no monster fish noob should get into gar. not until they are willing to care for a fish that could out live them and out grow them. if you want gar start out with false gar and when you save up give or take $20,000 for the tank then you can go ahead and try for a true monster.

as far as care it is much like gator gar care. bigger they get big and they are strong so they will tend to break there faces on glass walls so they need a pond or at least some visual barrier to the walls.

here is an idea for size

First of all my thanks for taling the time in giving insight.

You are right, after doing some reading about gator gars, i think imma have to wait until I move in to my new house where I can build and rear them a fish pond, imo, a tank is not suitable for them as they grow and their strength could break a glass tank

Your response has saved me from making an uninformed decision, imma have to stick to mh cichlids for now and resist the urge of rearing an RTC, Pacu and gars
