I fell in love with this fish and after seeing a thread about getting why get gars.. i decided to get one.. but it took awhile.. most fish stores asking price were crazy... but i finally got one!!!!

Its a spotted Gar, at around 5-6inches.... he's currently chilling with my Jardini at 4inches and with 3 Jack Dempsey at 4"..... so far no aggression from any of the fish.. but i have a bigger tank in waiting for the gar.. so this is just a grow out tank...

My question is.. at juveile age.. what do GARs eat???? His mouth is still very small.... was wondering if it will eat Blood worms, bine shrimp or pellets...

I do have some crickets that i got for my jardini but other than that.. he seems to be just chilling around swimming.. he took a few bites of blood worms but is that enough???

kind of challenging to tell from these pics, but your fish could likely be a longnose gar, not a spotted gar (it may just be the angle of the pics...even then it would very unlikely be a spotted, but a Florida). snout and body appear to be quite slender, and the caudal peduncle is quite long.

that being said, cichlids and definitely the jardini are not good tankmates for gars, especially ones that break their backs as easily as longnose gars. i would separate these fish as soon as possible before the gar sustains fatal damage.

as for feeding...there are many many threads on what to feed gars, so i would suggest doing a search. in short, go with feeder rosies when very small, but at the size of the fish you have pictured here, i would work on getting it on to non-live foods such as frozen shrimp/fish and pellets--

Thanks for the tip.. i just moved all my JD into my bottom 55gallon and moved all my non aggressive small fish (EBJD, Micro Geo) with the gar....

My Jardini is actually still a baby... in time i'll move him.. so i'll see how the aggression goes.. but ya.. i did notice my JD going crazy chasing around and my Gar just sorta got knocked... seems he likes to hoover on the surface of the water.. :D

That's a nice gar. Just watch out for the tank mates though.
