So my wife insisted that she heard a raccoon in our attic. I said she was nuts. then Saturday my neighbor said he saw a raccoon climb down our chimney. I didn't believe him, and figured "how could it get in the attic through the chimney? It's lined and sealed". It was "sealed".

I decided I better go check it out. As soon as I opened the attic door I heard some squeaking. I found these little buggers hiding in the insulation. I didn't see "mom" though. So I went to the chimney to see if I could find out where she got in at. Turned the corner and there she was about a foot from my face! :WHOA: I turned *** over tincups and about went through the ceiling. Apparently the previous owner of our house had a stove exhaust hood vented into the attic, and then into the chimney. When they took the vent out, they left the hole in the chimney behind and capped the hole with some screen wire. Mama must have pushed the screen out and made a home in our attic.

Now I gotta figure out how to get them out. I called 4 different places and none returned my call. My wife wanted to keep one as a pet! I decided against it. LOL.

Give the pic a second to load.

lol those things are cute. i always wanted a racoon for a pet.

cute feeders!

j/k:D

thats so cute!. Keep em! I remember seeing somewhere on the internet a guy that kept one who's mum got killed by road kill. Seriously cute.

Awww...that's cute. I hear racoons don'e make great pets. They would be cool though. Animal Control should take care of it if you want to get rid of them.

I had a friend growing up that had one. They are cool, but they're real "spunky". It used to want to bite all the time. Not being mean, just playing, but their teeth are like little razors. We used to walk it on a leash and everything. The funniest part was when he fed it he had to give it a water bowl to wash the food off in. Apparently, raccoons like to wash their food before eating it. It was hilarious watching him wash food. They have great dexterity in their hands.

It's just that I've got a 2 year old daughter, and wild animals tend to turn on humans after a certain age. That's what happened to my friends. When it was about 5 years old, it got mean as HECK and they had to have it put down. I don't want to deal with that. I also don't want them destroyed though, so it's proving to be tough to find someone to remove them

I don't think Animal Control destroys them. They just catch them and release them somewhere else.

I wonder how they can lay in that insulation.. all those tiny slivers of glass.. they are so cute.. never saw baby raccoons before.. they look so helpless..

yeah, that's what I thought too. I just talked to someone with a wildlife rescue league and she told me to turn the lights on in the attic and put a radio up there with a talk station playing 24/7 and mama will relocate them. Honestly, it's got to be 90 degrees up there and it's been nice outside at night. She told me that the mothers move the young once they're fairly mobile, and that the lights/radio trick will force her to do it sooner. Looks like I'm giving them the boot :D
