Remember how your parents always say/'id how cutting corners will get you nowhere? They're right.
Today i was going to clean the filter cartridge in my 30g. I decided to be lazy and try to maeuver the heater over and behind the submerged filter without un-suctioning them from the glass...
Bad idea.
The glass on the heater snapped, and a weird gray liquid leaked into the tank from inside the heater. A warning siren went off, and I flew around the tank with my hand trying to "rescue" my Bichir from the liquid. By the time I finally got her, I was bleeding from a nice gash I got from her dorsal spines...
i did a 90% water change and ran a magnet across the underside of the tank to make sure there were no lose metal parts. The filter, of course, backwashed everything in it, including something that looked like a small mouse. I stuck in a bag of carbon from an aquaclear pack. So the Bichir had to chill in a bucket for a while while I went to get a new heater, acclimatize it to the water, etc etc.
She's fine now, thankfully.
Oh, and a little while later, I realized that my cat had dropped a deuce in the bathtub, and I had been rubbing up against it the whole time I was changing water. Extra detail but it needed to be said...lol
Lesson learned: Don't cut corners! And if you are gong to, make sure you are near a pet store that is open until 8
