I was very interested in maybe getting 1 of these can you guys tell me anything you can about them. I can't seem to find much info on the internet. Will they eat frozen foods? What area do they swim in the most and anything else you can think of? What do you like best about them?

Dats are great fish to keep. They aren't overly aggressive like some cichlids I've kept in the past. There are a few different species of datnoid too...check out this link:

Some dats may give you more trouble weaning onto frozen/prepared foods, but for the most part, yes...they will eat frozen foods. I have a dozen ITs that eat anything I put in the tank...same thing with my ATs. I also have NGTs and NTTs that really test my patience with their picky eating habbits.

Dats can be pretty secretive when first acclimating to the tank. Just give them some good hide spots and once they are confident in their surroundings you will see them out swimming all over the place and reacting to their owner.

What do I like best...well I just love perch in general. I love watching them feed with such fantastic tenacity that it's truely entertaining. They are cautious, but also very bold when they feel they have to be but are rarely a problem with any tankmates (as long as they are not edible).

Highly recommend these guys!!!

from what ive heard it may be hard to get them off feeders. check what your source is feeding them. my little dat started on blood worms, went to freeze dried and is now starting to take sinking pellets. give lots of hiding places. incase you haven't read by now about them, they are slow growers so dont expect them to shoot up to a foot in a year like cichlids. just feed regularly and do water changes to keep them stable

What are they compatble with? Let me tell you what I have...

Clown Loaches
Tiretrack Eel
Blackghostknife
Striped Peacock Eel
Redtailed Tinfoils (Barbonymus Altus)

anything non aggressive that wont fit in its mouth. im keeping my dat with severums, giant danios, a pleco and syno cat. there is some chasing with thesevs but nothing that leads to damage. your stocking seems pretty safe. how big is the dat and the clown loaches? that would be my only worry

My loaches are 2" no bigger...Everything in my tank are juvies. The largest is my tiretrack at about 8". I am sure the dat would be small also. What would be the biggest size I could get without having to worry about my loaches?:WHOA:

Anyone have anymore helpful info?:)

If you get little guys, you'll be fine. Dats have a very slow growth rate so you should be fine for a while. I bought my ITs at about 1" and they have been in with some smaller tankmates for a while now with no problems.

Take a look at FishRoomPlus...he's a vendor on MFK. I bought some NTTs from him a while ago and couldn't be happier. They were about 3.5" when I got them.
