So right now I have a 55 gallon tank and it has some sailfin mollies in it and I will be getting some mid growing CA cichlids to go with them. I am trying to find a catfish that...

1)won't grow beyond 8in

2)Fairly even temperment(don't think I will have a problem with that)

3)will thrive in my water

4) won't cost me a small fortune(some of the synodontis)

In my search I have found Pimelodus pictus which seems great. They are active, hardy, etc. There seems to be confusion on thier adult size though. some say 5in some say 8in. Some sources say they need groups of 6 and some say they should be kept alone. Can someone clarify on this?

I have also looked at Platydoras costatus(raphael) and Megalechis thoracata(hoplos) which all seem fine accept that raphael like to hide all the time and hoplos are hard for me to find localy.

My main concern with these fish is pH. My pH is fairly high at around 7.6. Will theese fish be ok in this kind of water? Any comments?
