I really like how Red Texas cichlids look, and would be willing to dedicate an aquarium to one. However, I just can't justify the prices that I'm seeing. I'm sure they are expensive to produce, lots of selective breeding, but I personally would not spend more than $100 on a fish. I'm fairly new to fishkeeping, so its very possible I could kill it as well.

I'm not interested in the ones with the big nuchal hump either, looks kind of look an evil genius, perhaps plotting to escape the aquarium and take over my apartment.

This one is beautiful, but $650. Plus shipping.

Really cool, too. $330 :(.

So can anyone recommend a way to get a nice looking red texas at a lower cost? I've seen some small ones for sale for a reasonable price. Like Tropical Fish Distributors sometimes has them at <$10 each, very small. If I buy a bunch of those is it possible I could get one or two nice ones like the above? If not any other ideas?

The first one seems like it was edited in photoshop to make it look redder. The_eagle on aquabid.com sometimes has some fry for sale 31 bucks a piece.

Buying cheap red texas will not guarantee you will get a nice one. buying the ones from wholesalers will most likely give you crap. But if you want to take the chance id say go with The_eagle on aquabid.
