What is a good medium/large (not too huge) cichlid to introduce into a TALL 55gal tank. The only companions are 3 quickly growing 1" silver dollars.

I'd like this to be the 'star' of the tank and be comfortable alone. I was drawn to the conclusion that an American cichlid may be best considering many of them are more mild mannered than the african counterparts.. though that is not necessarily 100% true.

Any input?

The tank has a rocky setup with plenty of plants and caves.

Ooo Very cool. I just looked them up. Very nice colors. Thanks for the suggestion.

i dont know about them being less aggressive maybe if your talking about south american cichlids but IME 1 central has way more aggression/bigger attitude than all the africans i had put together, as for you suggestions, since its a tall tank that doesnt leave many options, salvinis are gorgeous fish like stated and you could do a pair, could also do a single severum, or a pair of sajica

i would rule out a severum, they are very chunky fish that get up to 10 inches and a tall tank doesnt leave much room to swim, turn around. but i agree salvini and sajica are both great choices. also a nicaraguense or a blue acara would work.

I know that you said you were looking for one "star" fish but i suggest a pair of convicts, they don't grow very large and from what i have read spawning is fairly simple.

Thanks alot for the suggestions. This new fish will be happening in the next few days. I'll only know what I decide on when I actually go to buy. lol
