Your TSN is just a baby. Give him a break... When he gets a little bigger you'll get to see him strike and engulf all kinds of things and it's pretty darn cool to watch. They're very sneaky and very fast when they want to be -the feeders won't know what hit 'em. Having said that, he is a CATFISH so yeah, he's mostly gonna lay around on the bottom until you turn the lights out. What I've found with my cat tank, is that it doesn't matter if I have other lights on in the room, if I turn the tank lights out, all my cats come out to swim and prowl around -especially in the presence of food. My most active catfish during the day is my channel cat. He actually does swim around and is fairly interesting to watch. My synodontis multipunctata also likes to come out and troll around during all times, although he does spend a fair amount of time "hiding" as well. When he does come out, he swims around and acts pretty goofy. He has a lot of attitude for a fish that doesn't get huge. He has pretty serious barbs though, so I don't really worry about him with bigger fish. I also really like my achara cat, but you may find him boring since he does spend a lot of time just waiting to be fed. Obviously, both the channel cat and the achara get pretty big, but you already have a TSN so I gotta think you have plans for a very large set up if you don't have one already...
Now that I really sit here and analyze my cats, I can't help but think that maybe a catfish isn't really what you're looking for...
Maybe you'd be happier with some kind of cichlid. I absolutely love to watch my flowerhorn and my peacock bass swim around. They're very active most of the day and they go to sleep at night which is really cute. I also find my blood parrot and my tiger oscar are both extremely entertaining just because they're pretty goofy and totally not shy. I know, kind of generic fish, but defnitely fun to watch.
Good luck finding the right fish! And give your TSN a chance, I promise when you do get to see him eat, you'll be impressed
