as i posted earlier, I have a 75g tank, in a couple weeks im hoping to get a turtle, I really want a soft shell turtle, but my tank wont be big enough to house a female and the only soft shells i can find for sale are not yet big enough to even take a guess at what gender it is. Does anyone know where I can get some that are just old enough to be sexed? or can anyone suggest another species of turtle appropriate for me, what I really like about the soft shell is that it will bury itself in the sand and is active and spends a lot of time in the water. Are there any other species of turtle that stays small with similar traits?

The best thing I would tell you is to check out a reptile show. I was at one a few weeks ago that had larger Softshells, some of which might have been large enough to sex.

the problem i see is that male softy would be it barely fits in a 75g
its the filtration that worries me soft shells need clean water but produce a lot of waste
your turtle always have infections
i have a 75g turtle tank with 2 FRB male and female
there very active in the water, i would recomend one turtle only
teritoral,
research is the way to go
and a heads up turtle are dirty and live a long time 80% water changes once a week for the rest of your life
dont get me wrong great pets but alot of work
musks
red bellies
yellow bellies
map
painted
look em up choose one

Also insted of a larger soft shell you could try a smaller one. Chinese softies are plentifull in the pet trade, make great pets and are all the fun of a bigger softie in a small package.:D They are even avaiable in a much atractive albino morph:naughty:.Just remenbar that they are very territorial so dont put more than one per tank
