The tank is 48x18x12.
The main concern in my tank are my ruby barbs. I've decided I don't want any cichlids because I feel I may put my barbs at risk by adding cichlids.
Originally I was thinking a South American leaf fish, I read they're pretty hard to get off of live foods.
Then I was thinking a leopard Ctenopoma. But I read they can get 6" and my barbs may eventually be snacks. :-/
Any ideas?

Elephant nose?

You could probably get away with smaller cichlids like apistos or less aggressive guys like smiling cichlid or a honduran red point.

Xenatoca eiseni is a cool, rarer Goodeid. Beautiful colors and can hold their own against aggressive fish of a similar size, just never keep them with catfish, and probably not loaches either.

I know my lfs can get elephant noses I'll look into those guys some more.

I do have a catfish in that tank. He's already had an eye picked out by someone a couple years ago. :-/

Still open to suggestions though.

I haven't actually owned them but I have cared for them at the store I worked at. I only ever got them to eat crickets lol

I feed mine freeze dried blood worms, freeze dried meal worms crikets, and I have seen one eat tetramin lol. I feed crickets occasionally, but we both know the go nuts for crickets. :)
