So after the demise of lurch the miuris, I really miss him, so full of personality and interactive. My spotted Congo puffer, The Dude, is the most chill puffer ever and my p. Cambodgiensis, mr. Murder lips, is so savage that I’m scared to put my hands in the tank, but neither one have much personality, and the only interacting is Mr. Murder Lips trying to eat me through the glass. I’m going to have a 75 free fairly soon, so I was wondering what is a very personable puffer that can live in a 75g?

Has anybody ever had red saddle puffers? They are really pretty fish, be awesome if they have personality.

Maybe, but the $200 in substrate alone kinda puts a damper on the saltwater itch. But for the right fish I can be patient and get the extra stuff I need. Any suggestions? I’ve liked every saltwater puffer I’ve seen. It would be cool to be able to have a couple smaller ones.

Any of the Canthigaster puffers would be good in that size tank. I’d probably just get one though (it can be kept with other fish though). Pass on green spots - they are evil. Be sure to quarantine and treat new additions to the tank in marine (if not also in freshwater), disease is no joke in saltwater.
If you stick with freshwater, schoutodini or amazons are good for a group puffer, though amazons aren’t much for personality.

My schoutendi is pretty lacking in personality. I also cannot afford a number of them, but believe me, if I could I would!
Just picked up a 125 tonight, fx4 filter and a bunch of other stuff. Hopefully, tomorrow I will be able to set it up and get the 2 75’s freed up. One’s going into the bedroom at the foot of the bed, the other will be floating a bit as a holding tank while everything is being moved around. Maybe I’ll just give it a generic puffer tank and go to the lfs and browse, but it’s hard to not come home with whatever you see.

Lol i considered converting my 80g planted to salt last year.
I did all the match and calculations and shopping around, I already had a light, and a sump with heater.
Still looking at $1000-$1500 for set up to an entry level low tech reef aquarium. Most of the cost is rocks & sand but if you go for the cheap local stuff you can get a lot of awful hitch along pests.

Anyway I can totally see why you decided not to.

When you say red saddle to you mean Takifugu occelaris?
I see these a couple of times a year at my LFS, they seem like very personable fish.
Apparently they don't tolerate tankmates, you can start them in fresh and transition them to anything from mid level brackish to full marine.
They like to bury themselves in the gravel.

I commonly see Auriglobus modestus or a lookalike species, these are open water swimming species that use their fins similar to a triggerfish.
Never kept them but they are aggressive from what I have read.

Here is my final suggestion, Amazon puffers.
You can keep them in a group, in a nice planted set up that looks pleasing to the eye. still WAY cheaper than a saltwater low tech set up.

I was thinking amazons at some point, but the ones I have had were not very interactive. That doesn't mean that I might not get them, The 75 I'm putting inj at the foot of our bed is totally available. I was going to put leopold, my spotted congo puffer, in that tank and build the tankmates around him. I'm a little concerned about it though, just cause the amazons can be pretty neurotic, and I don't want them to disturb leopold or out compete him for food. He gets along well with gouramis, mosquito fish and silver dollars, but I have not tried anything else with him yet. The main issue is finding species that will not out compete him for food, he's with the mosquito fish right now. I feed flake before I put in his food, and the mosquito fish hardly ever pick anything up off the bottom. Works out well.
I loved Lurch, my congo puffer. I might just try to find another one of those.
