I would like to build a tropical fish pond in my basement. I have seen a number of pictures of concrete ponds with viewing windows which my wife loves, and that is what matters after all isn't it.

Anyways, I am thinking somewhere around 15 x 8 x 3 or 4 deep. I would like two windows 6 feet wide. From what I have gathered so far concrete block mortared together then filled would be the easiest option. Then cover in a thick mortar layer followed by primer and multiple layers of pond paint. I should also mortar in the angle iron to the block to support the glass.

The rest is simply tiling the outside with whatever my wife picks out.

Has anyone done something like this successfully?

Actually I am doing this no. You will want to use 1/2 glass. Where you want to build the openings with the opposite end of the square end block. The other side has a slate down it and you will be making a open slat end on both sides. This will allow you to slide the glass into the slats and seal it. You will then want 2 lintels to go over the top of the window. This will give you the ability to lay block over the top and an option for sealing the top for water proofing. If you have any question let me know as I use to lay brick/block to put me throu college.
