So I've never owned ca/sa before other than Oscar's and a friend had a stunning pair of red Devils. I've always kept Africans but have been thinking about some large beautiful Americans. I have a 500 gallon aquarium 6ftx4ftx3ft. I am interested in festea, dovii, Oscar's and Viejas species particularly black know belts. How would you stock the tank?

Pair of festae, a large Vieja and an oscar ;). Anything stated above will work really (except you want the dovii by himself if that's what you choose), it's a nice sized tank so good luck

I agree with the above stocking unless you don't want breeding, then go with a single festae, oscar, blackbelt, and a few other various sa/ca cichlids. The dovii, though will likely eventually end up by himself or possibly with a mate in a tank that size...

I am interested in keeping such a large majestic fish like that and would be okay with just a pair of dovii when they mature. But no way I could stand looking at the 500 with just a couple small dovii in it. How long would i have before the dovii would need the tank to themselves? Forgot to mention that I would also like to keep midas or red devils.

I"ve never kept Dovii, but if I had to guess...I'd say you could keep Dovii in a tank like that with other fish for a year. They hit a 12 inches or more is when I'd guess they start taking over.

Have you looked at Umbees?

It may be a year or two or even longer before it would be just the pair. The volume of the tank is great, I'd just be concerned at 6' long the other fish may never escape the dovii's territory.

You have a lot of gallons to play around with. Get them all as young and let them grow up together. I would just skip the dovii not bc of personal experience but just bc of what I have read
