Long time reader here but 1st time poster :) Well I'm at that point where I have to setup a "monster" tank for my Oscars and it's coming down to one of these two, 72x18x21 or 48x24x24...which way would you go ??

Oscar(s)? Is it a pair? a trio? got 20 of em? knowing how many could help make a better answer, if it's 1 or 2 i'd go with the 4' length and if it's more than 2 i'd go with 6'

Yeah I guess knowing how many would help...right now I have two tiger oscars that are about 3 1/2". They're sharing a tank right now with two spotted pim cats but I would get another bottom fish, probably a pleco or two...plan on filtering the tank with two XP3's and a AC110.

yeah, especially if ur gonna get plecos go with the 6' length, especially if you've got room for it bigger is always better :P

I like the looks of the long 6' better wasn't sure which was more important length or width (fish tank wise) :)

Both tanks I'm looking at are glass and neither is drilled for overflows, should I hold out and keep looking for a drilled tank ??

Not necessarily. You can make an overflow system out of PVC pipe. Check out the DIY section.

I like the look of the short wide tanks, the square tank is amazing with the back over flowing over the wall some day.... when I get over the rainbow

I am not sure about your area however in my area we have 3 guys that can drill anything..... check your local Saltwater store they prob. know a person that drills tanks

nothing like a black painted back, that has been drilled you only see the fish... and it is easy to hide all the other stuff that you need (heater, power heads so on and so on) just a thought

this way you would be able to find that tank that rocks your socks off

Hey everybody thanks for all your input, I love this site ! Slight wrinkle added to the plans today, lets see to start neither tank really panned out, one was too much $2/ft and wouldn't budge on price. The other tank was less than $1/ft but had a lizard in it :(

Besides that a co-worker gave me 5 juvenile JD's (1 1/4 - 1 1/2") so now they're in the tank with the 2 O's & 2 pim cats, so yeah it'll get crowded quick. Well anyways out picking up some baby pellets for the JD's and the LFS had a great close out price on a 75g tank, so now this will be home to the JD's & O's until I find a great deal on a larger tank.

This should buy me a couple of months and end up being home to a pair of JD's !
