Feeder Fish
MFK Member
I've got a Florida/Spotted gar and a few Polypterus. I've been feeding them rosy reds (well, the gar, but the polys tend to catch one or two also), but I hate constantly quarantining minnows. So, I want to start breeding something.

I've heard before that convicts make great feeders, because they breed so fast. Would these work for me? Or is there a better species? I'd love to breed something more interesting than livebearers (platies & swordtails, specifically). I've also thought about blood red jewel cichlids, and have been told these will work as feeders.

If not convicts of blood red jewels, what fish are born/hatched the largest, and/or grow the fastest?

Thanks!

Cons IMO

For those of us who aren't familiar with the common tropical fish, anybody want to chime in with suggestions on how to set up a convict breeding tank for maximum production?

I also want to know if they are compatible with pond snails and ghost shrimp in the same tank. I've heard that snails can eat fish eggs, and that ghost shrimp might catch and eat small fry, but I don't have any experience with tropical egg-layers to really know.

I'm trying to feed a pair of redfin pike primarily, but some other fish like snails and I'd like to use the same tank if I could. And everything likes shrimp.

the cons will take out the shrimp that i know from experience . snails i have no clue. as far as setting up a breeding tank .... get tank , add water , place in a pair of cons wait 30 minutes and whammo you have babies . lol jk it takes nothing special . they are water rats and would breed in sewer water if need be . good luck with the process

No I just need to find convicts. . . No one anywhere around here carries them, specifically because they breed so fast.

I saw em at a Petco for $3.99. I asked for a firemouth which was $2.39 in the same tank and the employee gave me a convict instead :):):)

Got another one at Petland discount for $2.88 if you know what store that is :screwy:

They're cheap :grinno:
