Looking for gar keepers for info.

Just got my first gar. It's a Florida gar and was hoping for a little first hand experience from those who keep them. I've read all the internet info about them but you can't beat hands on experience from those that have them.

What do you need to know? I’ve kept every species except shortnose. And still keep a few monster tropical and Florida

Did you have any particular questions? I’m no expert, but have kept several Florida’s and now others. But you are correct, there is a lot of others with great knowledge on the subject. I’ll help where I can.

The only input I have is make sure lids are heavy and no open gaps lost a Florida to jumping out of the aquarium.

they do best on live feeders when small most will switch to krill when they get bigger also try some cut up shrimp or cut up slivers of fish have kept floridas and longnose want to do a gator gar pond later on

I was told that it's eating krill. Currently it's 11 inches. I'm pretty sure it will get along with my other fish and the other fish won't harass it. Just wanted to know what other types of food to offer it and how it will work with my others in the tank.
So current stock is.
Giraffe cat - 13.5 inches
2 azul bass - 7 to 8 inches
Temensis bass - 7 to 8 inches
2 strigatta pikes - 8 to 9 inches
L-14 Golden pleco - 10 inches
L-240 Vampire pleco - 5 to 6 inches
Indo dat - 5 to 6 inches
Silver dat - 5 to 6 inches
Distichodus atroventralis - 6 to 7 inches
Florida gar - 11 inches
Everything is wild caught except the azul which are f1. Here's a short clip of it.

The Florida Gar will learn to eat pellets also.

A lot of people have good luck with mixing them. I don’t. Looks like the Pbass and pikes are keeping him on his toes like I said in your other post. I’ve read many mixed outcomes with those mixes. Good luck to you

Right now the pikes and bass aren't quite sure about it. They are staying towards the bottom of the tank.

That’s good. Gars don’t go on the offensive really. But as long as it doesn’t get too stressed or sick, hopefully they just leave him be.
