I just lost my Red Devil who lived alone in a 75 gallon. I don't know exactly what the cause of death was because I was out of town, so I think I'm just going to sterilize the whole system and start from scratch.

I considered going with another Devil because I love them so much but I've had severa but I think I want to try something new. I'm a big fan of aggressive fish and personable fish. I'd love to have a big puffer but my tank is kind of in between sizes for FW puffs. Fahaka's are too big and the next size down, something like an Abei, is just too small for my tank. I've mostly kept cichlids my whole life but I'm open to anything freshwater/brackish.

One thing that interests me that I've never kept is bichirs but honestly I don't know a whole lot about them. If I were to go with bichirs which breeds could I keep, how many, and what else could I stock with them?

I'm not dead set on having a single fish or a bunch of fish, I don't even remember the last time I had a community tank so that would be interesting to me as well. Just wanted to see what ideas you guys can come up with if you had an empty 75 to work with. Filtration isn't an issue, I've got an XP3 and an AC110 on the tank and I've got a spare Sunsun canister sitting around that I've never taken out of the box.

Haha I thought about gulpers but I don't know if I could afford to feed the damn thing. I've wanted one for a long time but I think one in my tank would be wasted space.

I think a tank with just bichirs would look bare. They are fantastic fish but they can be shy and inactive at times. They would look great in a west African predatory tank with say... 10 congo tetras, 2 bichirs (i'd go for Senegal or delhezi), 3 leopard bushfish and perhaps a west African knife fish? Or you could go with what pole said and just have a large number of one species. A large shoal of exodons would look great!
