I've been keeping aquariums for 4-5 years now and I've been keeping discus for the past 2.5-3 years.

I'm looking to try something new.... I'm a little bored with discus and have been eyeballing some CA's, but am also open to other ideas as well. I'm open to the ideas of a 'wet pet' or some other monster fish... datnoids have also interested me a little too. A species with a little intelligence would be nice.

Right now I have a 120 gallon and the footprint is 4'x2'x2'. I have an RO unit, so any water parameters are possible for me... but I'm NOT interested in SW... I have a couple of eheim canisters and inline heaters... so I'm pretty well equipped.

I've been admiring all of the beautiful adults in everyone's avatar's so any suggestions would be greatly appreciate and considered. Some of the things I've considered are (forgive my ignorance with the actual names) are:

Electric Blue Jack Dempseys
Dovii
Umbee
Synspillum
Vieja Argentea
Jaguars

Please help! :) Any pictures posted would be nice too. :) Thanks in advance for any help. ;)

Dovii - Females can get to 16", males larger, depending on source of info, likely smaller in aquaria but still large. Not really suited for a 4 foot tank.
Umbee - Same as Dovii only a little smaller.
Jaguars - Female would be comfortable, males grow large and might not be as comfortable, but have seen them in 4 foot tanks, can't say I'd recommend it though. Great fish.
EBJD are nice, and you could have a couple.
Vieja are also pretty nice fish, not sure on compatibilities.

yep i think a Dovii and umbee are little to big for your tank!

About a pair of AKA" black nasties(nandopsis haitiensis)

just as much fun as your umbee and dovii and more sort after in the cichlid world""

ow yah"" the female runs the show with this cichlid hence the black nastie name!

Why dont you do a fahaka puffer and they get big.
I never kept one but from what I heard and read on this forum, puffers are really smart and personable! GL

Jags are my favorite out of your choices, but if you're looking for something a little more fun than discus there are always bichir species, and when it comes to being personable idk how much more personable you can get than oscars, handfeeding at its easiest just a ton off waste - so many options when restocking a big tank haha :P

Pike Cichlids, Mine are alot more personable then my Oscar ever was. They are also abit different then alot of your other species often seen in home aquariums. I'm fairly new to them myself but really enjoy them. Otherwise Festea are beautiful cichlids imo, but don't know if they'de be suitable..

I think you should get the electric blue's their awesome!!
