Hello from Manitoba. I have a couple of saltwater tanks with mostly fish but a few tough corals (leathers and mushrooms). My fish tend to eat everything else! I have a few eels (Zebra, Mexican Dragon, Yellowhead), assorted angels (Queen, French, Potters), a few tangs (Yellow, Hippo, Kole), a Saddleback butterfly, couple of oscellaris clowns and a Volitan Lionfish.
I'm about 2 hours south of ott, But sadly dont have a tank at the moment, and likely wont have another for a few years (school is in the way at the moment, which means funds are on the short side).
close to hamilton and you. have to fish only tanks and are about to try our luck with small corals. but have heard to many things so not really sure what i woujd need for a 20 g tank. one fiend said if i over load with live rock that i woukdnt need a skimmer , he said skimmers are for fish waste?
I would say that is debatable... skimmers are not "nessisary" but if you dont have a skimmer you need some sort of organic waste export, may that be large regular water changes, or macro algeas growing in a sump (with the occational trim/removal of old or new growth) but it depends on the system.
Basicaly the key is you need to get rid of nitrates/nitrites/ammonia/phosphates and all other chemicals resulting form the matabolism of marine life be that bacteria, corals, or fish. As these disolved organics are hard on alot of reef life (including fish).
Live rock will eliminate nitrites and ammonia if there is enough live rock for the stock, and if there is enough nitrifying bacteria in the rock, but with nitrates and phosphates you basicaly have to rely on water changes or macro algeas to remove them from the water.
