Here are a few tetracanthus shots.

female above, male below

I kept this pair in a 125 gal tank by themselves (and fry when they spawned), in moderately hard water (250m/L Total hardness, pH 7.8, alkalinity 80-100ppm, high Conductivity 500-1000)
temps mid to upper 70s"F

after a few spawns, they went to a community 240gal with a friend in Chicago.
Male hit around 10", female 5", and I believe here growth was slow due to spawning early (4-5")

Awesome guys thanks-

Were they a fun pair to keep or did they hide all the time?

And this was purchased as a male hartwegi. I would almost put my money on hartwegi x bifa but a buddy of mine who knows the breeder swears it’s pure. Very colorful guy full of personality. I have since sold this fish to a fellow keeper since he got too agressive for my community.

Thos thread feels a little like “do my homework for me,” honestly. Probably not, CrazyPhishGuyManDude seems pretty real, just my instincts. I am the new guy, anyway. Nice pics everyone.

I tend to post only after I’ve gone through exhaustive research, the tetracanthus is hardly widely available but is when compared to the other species availability and I’ve ran out of articles and pictures on the others. Hartwegi seem to vary vastly between ired/blue and blue/yellow depending on collection point.

I know a lot of newbs come here and say hey check out my dovii in a 55 with 4 bloodparrots and shovelnose.

That’s not me. I’m the guy who apologizes to all their friends on a regular basis for constantly talking about fish and history on google is cichlidae, MFK, cichlid forum, TUIC and aquabid.

I was having difficulty getting anything aside from Wayne Leibels experience with the marms and the description that appears on the GCCA, aqua scape online and fishbase.

Just crowd sourcing more info and pics

No offense intended at all, love your 55 stock list lmao! Merry Christmas to all

I have been a member of the ACA (American Cichid Assn for decades, and find it is a great source of info, their entire library (every issue) of the Buntbarsche Bulletin (Journal of the ACA) becomes available on line when you join, and it also gives you a menbership to the on-line Cichlid Room Companion, which is full of the most up to date info in the cichlid world.
You can also attend their annual convention, which is often a gathering of the most well known breeders and venders of the most rare and not so rare cichlids (maybe available no where else).
I have picked up some very hard to get species at their conventions.
Tomocichla asfraci, Gymnogeophagus (years ago, before they became more widely available) Paratheraps bulleri, rare Madagascans, and many others.
