I know I know I am on MFK asking for smaller catfish :screwy:

I am a cichlid guy and my son is obsessed with catfish and I am not ready to house a monster catfish YET. Till I am ready to convery my 125 or pond over I am looking for smaller catfish (8") to go with so he gets his catfish and I get to stay married longer. I am thinking about getting a couple Platydoras costatus and/or Pimelodus Pictus but figure I would ask the catfish experts before I made a mistake.

Thanks guys!

Pictus are very fun active fish if you get 3 or more and would be great for a kid. They don't get too big, and are shiny to catch your eye. Wonderful for a kid in my opinion.
Cory cats also have cool personalities. And kept in 3 or more will shoal around the bottom or middle of your tank. I had one little shwartz cory that I had in my friends tank of danio's without any other corys and he took to schooling with the danios. It was pretty fun. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=293

Pictus, Gulper, many Synos. fit the bill.

Your putting a Gulper in the same class as synos and Pictus??? :screwy:

Gulpers are GREAT ... if you would like to have a species only tank or a tank with fish that are Much bigger than they are.. but they also get into the 1 foot range of size so it's prob a big big.

The main question is what else are you putting in the tank, if it's cichilds then what species as some are EXTREMLY agressive and you'd be better off with different types of cats ( Something armoured)... if it's a calm tank then pictus, Jaguar, 4 Line Pim, Cory's, Bumblebees (either asian or South Americian) Raphs are always a good choice for smaller cats as well... There are a thousand things to consider, but For a general recommendation I would say any of the ones I mentioned would be good

watcha keeping other than the cats there ???
that might help with the suggestions, the asian bumble bee catfish is a cool cat to keep with chiclids

Thanks for the input guys, I have a couple cories in my shrimp and fry tanks but since they don't have long wiskers he don't consider them catfish :) I plan to get smaller cats since I digg raising fish but they will eventually be in a 40g or my 125g and if I go for broke an outdoor pond. They will end up with cichlids but for starts it will be a catfish only tank. At the LFS they have 2.5" Striped Raphaels for $6 so will prob start with 2 of them and 3 Pictus and look out for the other recommendations.

get a group of raphaels they will be fun to watch

Pictus would be a good choice for sure! Gulpers will try to eat anything that's not bigger than they are, but it still doesn't stop them from trying. Porthole Cats can also fit the bill, but the kind of look like long Cories. Asian Bumble Bees are great too. If you can find some Zamora Cats (haven't seen them in ages), they used to be my favorite.

Hey Bass.... Pictus aren't monsters?
