getting 6 rams from a local fish store everyone is telling me they need super soft water to breed. Is there any truth to this? Any tips would be appreciated

It all depends on whether they are locally bred or sourced from the wild. Wild fish, depending on how sensitive the species is, will require conditions (ph and hardness) closer to what they have in the wilds if you want to successfully breed them. What kind of rams are you talking about? German blues? If it's german blues, they'll be fairly sensitive and will require softer water.
