I'm in the process of constructing a vivarium (picture thread to come soon). It's a 56g tall tank (30"L X 18"W X 24"H). It's set up with a false bottom and a water area that's around 8" X 10" in one corner, and about 3" deep. The rest of it is land/wood and I'm planning to have lots of plants.

I was originally planning to house poison dart frogs, but I'm reconsidering because the wife really doesn't want fruit fly cultures in the apartment because she's worried they'll escape and we'll have an infestation.

So... I'm looking for a vivarium inhabitant that doesn't need to be fed live food. Ideally, something colorful and somewhat active (in case you haven't guessed, I'm still pretty attached to the PDR idea :) ) Any suggestions?

Not wanting to feed live food kind of rules out any amphibians and any lizards. Your only other choices would be a smaller species of arboreal snake. If you plan on having lots of plants, I'd suggest a nice looking amazon tree boa or small Chondro python. If you don't have problem feeding live bugs without the hassle of fruit flies though? The sky is the limit on cool amphibians. Red eye leaf frogs, Vietnamese Mossy frogs, Big eyed tree frogs. The list goes on. It's all about what appeals to you. A planted vivarium with snakes I've found to be a ton of extra work. A pair of Day geckos would probably look dynamite in that enclosure also. Keep what pleases your eye and can comfortably fit in that space.

Yeah no live food kind of puts a damper on things...could do some newts, something more semi-aquatic like firebellies rather than the fully aquatic species, or maybe a salamander like a tiger.
