Hey everyone, I'm looking at adding a pleco to my aquarium. The curiosity is getting to me, and it's nice to see a new face in tank every now and then.

heres whats going on in the tank-
55 gallon
Ac70 filter
flourite substrate for plants
very very small patches of dwarf baby tears (hoping it might carpet out)
and currently only about a dozen ghost shrimp chilling out.

What I'm looking for is something that would get along well with either some angels or maybe some discus. so something under 6inches would be fantastic.

The only ones i've really seen that would look good and stay small seem to be atleast $50ish, and i'm looking at spending around $30 max.

any help is appreciated!

You could look at a BN pleco, a rubber lip pleco, or a gold strip pleco. I've keep them all in a 55 gallon tank. They only get around 5" and get along with everyone.

At some point in the future I would recommend a up-grade to your AC70. That might be a little on the light side once you start adding more fish to your tank.

I only use Bristlenose and Clown Plecos. They only get about 5".

Around here, you can find 1.5" ones for about $5-$7 at LFS. Find a local breeder. From what I am told, they are real easy to breed. The breeders I know have them for $4.

Yeah, sounds like a BN fits your requirements for price, size and compatability. There are plenty of cool BN variants, many stay under $30. Although I don't know if they'd munch on your baby tears? Personally, I don't keep any plants in my plec tanks, but I know plenty of people who do with no ill effects.

awesome, i like the prices i'm seeing online for the BNs.

how would i find a local breeder? might there be some sort of online registry or something maybe?

edit- though somewhat irrelevant, how fast do they grow?

I would just ask around at your LFS and on here. If you find someone that breeds any fish, they likely know other breeders that might do BSN in your area.

They are relatively slow growers; nothing like common plecos. They do not have the huge bio load of a common pleco.

Good luck.

BSNs are very fun plecos. They have funny personalities and loooove to work. I've had mine for a few months now and it has only just now doubled in size. I think it's around 2-1/2" now.

If you're willing to spend some more $, consider L134 (leopard frogs) if you're going to keep discus. Both like warmer water (above 80 F) that's both soft and acidic. They both are carnivourous feeders. The L134s stay small. Larry Waybright on PlanetCatfish breeds 134s in his discus tank.

thanks everyone, i think i'm going with the bristlenose once i find a breeder!
