Hey guys, i have been a monster fish enthusiast for a few years now. I have seen a couple of others ask about this fish on here but no one ever seems to have any luck whatsoever with actually getting one in North America. I think it would be fantastic to own one even though they get absolutely huge. I am talking about Wels catfish. So i guess my question is , is there any place at all in the USA or Canada that you can buy them, any place at all that would even consider ordering one in for you or any online spot that you can order them from. I am located in Moncton New Brunswick Canada. Any help would be great thanks.

Ever consider keeping a relative like a Wallago sp? I know jeff rapps has some W. leeri he's been trying to get rid of for a while.

It has crossed my mind though i don't know very about them. I hear they come from Thailand/South east Asia, probably something which would require a heater no doubt? I figured i would stick with the Wels because i know they can handle cold temperatures well. haven't been having much luck looking for them though.

Are you really serious about the well's catfish? How much background research have you done for the well's cat? These are the giant's of the catfish species. And I do mean giants. These catfish can actually grow to the size of being able to injest a fully grown man. I am 6'-5" tall and weigh 250 lbs US. I can not picture or immagine what it would be like to be a meal for a well's cat. Can you? These cat fish get upwards of 20 feet long. The world's record for the largest wild caught well's cat is close to 300 lbs US.

Another point came to mind. Once he outgrows his aquarium habitat, what do you plan on doing with him? Put him a heated swimming pool in your backyard? If you have doubts about the size, just google it on your PC and take a long look of the beast.

I would suggest you do your footwork on the well's cat before making a final decission, in wanting to keep the well's catfish in your hobby.

As far as where to purchase one, I would not have the faintest idea of where to even to begin to look. Good luck.

I bet a 300 pound Wells is a couple 30+ years old or so. Especially a cold water species. If you find one, buy it! If it grows massive over night and your not able to re-home it just grill it up :D

I have a Goonch and 90% of the comments are "do you know how big that gets?" LOL I'm the one who owns it HAHA Of corse I know how big it gets.......

Good question and welcome to MFK. Good luck on your search :headbang2

very serious, i would find the biggest tank i could and that i could afford and if absolutely necessary possibly use a pond. I know how big they grow and also i have read of several other people who have kept them, including i think at least one or two who are members of this forum, also whether it was true or not a couple were advertised on an online site ( i think aquabid a while back). I know it can be done, probably expensive but doable.I figured that before i even got into specifics about tanks and housing arrangements, i would even see if it is possible to get them in North America. After all, not much point even going to that trouble if it is impossible or near so to get them here. Other then a handful of stuff i have read on the internet and the ad from the online website a while back i haven't seen any evidence it is possible or that they could even be ordered in.

Good to see a New Brunswick'er on this site, I'm in Riverview; welcome to MFK
