Hello well first of all let me introduce myself to this section as ive never explored it. Gruntking is the name and breeding is the game...

Allright no more cheesy stuff.

I am going to be redoing my 46 gallon bowfront and thinking of a pair of breeding cichlids to keep in here. The tank is filtered by an AC 110 and a 10 gallon sump with a 300 GPH pump, so filtration is not an issue. Tank also has a 200 watt heater and is topless :nilly:!

I am thinking about getting a pair of cichlids that will breed at least once a month and produce some good looking fry. Was also thinking about selling the fry on my Aquabid account, and if all goes well, getting some more tanks for some more breeding projects!

That being said what cichlids would you recommend? Please remember that the fry would have to be sold so no convicts as not even the LFS will take them for free lol.

I was thinking about getting an EBJD and some blue genes and trying that out since the price paid for them is pretty high. But would like to hear others opinions!

Thanks.

There are alot of cichlids you could breed in there but not sure about that size tank for jd. There a lot of lake victoria cichlids that will breed in there but not sure how they sell in your area. Might also want to look at some kind of peacock or mbuna then you could put a trio or more in the tank and always have some fish for sale. Just a few idea wish you luck but don;t think you will need it with these fish.

For that size tank, I would say Bricardi or julidochromis would be good choices. Brichardi will breed like rabbits, but they are pretty common, so selling the fry can be difficult. I you can get a nice strain of julidochromis going(good color and bar patterns) that's the way to go IMO. A friend of mine is pumping out about 100 transcriptus every few months at $7 a piece.

Which ones sell better, African, South or Central American?
We actually have a severe shortage of convicts around here (one store in 40 miles had 5, I took 3 of them lol) so I am doing some of them right now but like my lfs said, they come and go so I already know what I dont sell, my bigger natives will enjoy :D But back on topic, I am wanting to make a little extra on the side to help support this addictio...err I mean hobby. If I could find a medium in difficulty:sell price that is, so I guess I am asking pretty much the same as Gruntking is! selling a 100 every few months for $7 per keeps me from slaving @ the 8-5 for a bit longer :headbang2

..Well I was gonna say convicts, but thats obviously outta the question lol.
How about severums or some type of red/green terrors?

- Personally I've only had luck with convicts. (And that was just several hours ago) :)

I had luck with convicts a couple days ago should have freeswimmers by now.

Severums seem like a nice option, and im sure i can get a good pair plus keep my geos and loaches in the tank with them!

Yeah, I dont think you should have a problem since severums are on the "peaceful side" as being a cichlid..

you could go with some dwarf cichlids of some type and have a few breeding pairs, i have the same size tank and am waiting for my firemouths to grow large enough for them to start pairing off and breeding, hopefully i will have a 75 soon to split up the goup to help reduce aggression when they pair off

Are fire mouths easy breeders? They look real nice looking...I had one once. Too bad don't think it would co-exist with my current stock...
