Arapaima aren't a type of gar... And I think you should probably do ALOT more research before that making that massive commitment.

When you start talking Arapaima people get very curious of the ability a person has to house one. 55 gallon? no. 500 gallon? no. 2000 gallon? no. 5000 gallon? maybe. 10,000 gallons+? Better. You get the idea. If you dont have something along those lines it is highly frowned upon to get a fish like the Arapaima.

But if you can house one properly, youve come to the right place and people will be lining up to see pics of that setup. Welcome to MFK

I think only alligator gar are illegal in CA. I could be wrong. Like everyone says, you need a swimming pool sized tank to house arowana. Check out Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco and see how big they get!

Same Family as Arapaima, but different Sub-Family. You still need a big tank for an Arowana, but at least you don't have to hire a bulldozer to build it And welcome to MFK to you too!
