Okay, here's the deal. I have a 55 gallon tank and I am wanting to get my first ever canister filter because quite frankly, I have had enough of the HOB filters.

I have read reviews of all the popular models like Marineland, Eheim, Fluval, etc. and the frustrating thing I have discovered is that for every single canister filter you will find that some people love it and others hate it.

Since I am new to purchasing one, this doesn't help me much. So, I am wondering if someone can recommend a particular brand over another that they have used for a long time and haven't had much in the way of problems? I am looking to "over filtrate" basically so I will be buying a model that filters something like 75-100 gallons.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Rena XP3 is awesome for an over filtered 55. Very Very easy to clean and maintain and is silent. I also like the option of choosing a powerjet or a spray bar.

I primarily use Renas and Fluvals with no problems what so ever. I have never used Eheim but I wouldnt hesitate getting one of those either.

Depends on what you want to spend. If you can afford it buy an eheim. I am very impressed with their product's function and reliability. The company is also good to deal with for customer service. I have also had luck with some cheap models. I have a cascade that has run everyday for about 8 years. The rena filters are okay but I don't think you get anything a cascade won't do. I don't know about the fluvals beside the fx5.

my sentiments exactly...rena and fluvals are all I use...eheims are great but too pricey for me

personally i pick eheim or fluval... but renas xp series are also really good canisters to look into.

Eheim pro 2 is what im running and i love it, recommend it to you aswell

Fluval 405 worked great on my 55g. highly recommended.
