After taking several years off from fish keeping I've been bitten pretty hard by the bug and I'm thinking of getting back in. Ideally I'd like to purchase smaller fish and grow them out as a community, for fish in the 2-3" range, what's an ideal size grow out tank? I was thinking maybe a 75 (48x18) until they started to mature then going to a 220g or custom. I'd like to house 3-4 species together with 2-3 individuals of each species.
Would housing the young bass by themselves be preferable as opposed to housing them with some type of dither fish such as a small tetra? Or just provide an abundance of cover with wood and plant decorations? Thanks all-very excited about all the cichla species that seem to be available!

first of all 2-3" size pbs are good to start off with as they are less aggressive and to make a community tank from young is much easier. yes a grow out tank would be great for a start till they put on some size then they can go into ur 220 gal. the idea of putting them with small tetra is a no go even with 2" size pbs as those would just be feeders therefore i guess you will be housing them alone.. some cover would be good to reduce stress on the pbs when u first get them.. i suggest u find yourself a reputable dealer as small size pbs are very hard to ID the species they are till they are bigger. maybe even put in a preorder if it makes it easier.

good luck!

Monster aquarium is getting orinos in Sunday after 4pm, $20 apiece at 3". They are from Taiwan, most likely Rio metals. Also discus origins. Welcome back. My soon to be new batch will be Sunday consisting of 2 intermedia, and 6 orinos, and yes they'll be in a 75 until they gain a little size. You'll be fine

I'd like to have temensis, piquiti, kelberi, and pinima ideally. A nice green orino is hard to beat though!
