I've tried reading as much as possible on mfk, flowerhorncraze and google, but I'm finding it to be hard to get the info I'm looking for. It's just overwhelming with all the strains and crosses out there. So what I'm trying to do is get a pair breeding. I've kept south and central american cichlids before so I don't think it'll be too much of a jump for me. My main question, what would be the best way to go about getting a pair? If I eventually wanted to breed red dragons, should I get just get a batch of high quality red dragon fry and grow them out and pick the nicest? Are there problems with fertility? I see some people crossing fh with blood parrots, is this what is normally done? Thanks for any help I can get, it seems like becoming an expert on fh is a hobby of it own.

If you want to get great results for the FH you want. The cheapest way to go is like what you just mentioned, buying a batch of high quality red dragon frys(5-10% of the frys will be the top best looking ones). And those that comes out the nicest, you pick those out and give away the rest or sell or whatever you wish to do with them. Most breeder overseas will just cull them or sell them to LFS here in the USA and around the world.
As far fertility problems, no there is no problem with Red Dragon whatsoever. As far as Kamfa, yes...white eyes are most likely unable to breed at all. But there are cases where white eyes did have success of breeding, but base on average...no. Kamalau aka GM, they have a high rate of fertility just like Red Dragon also, but there are some that aren't capable of breeding.
And for crossing with a parrot, ehh...if your looking into creating your own FH strain or trying out something new and do your own artwork on your FH. Then yes people do use parrot with it, but I would not cross it has deformity from the parrot can come out a lot onto the cross. Has to be crossbred over again with another FH on my opinion and observation I've learned from it.

Thank you very much for the info Big. I'm glad to hear that about the red dragon, I probably like them the best but if I have trouble getting good fry, are there any other strains that are fairly fertile and don't take too long to mature? Also, any recomendations on a source for fry? As of now, aquabid looks to be the best source but maybe I'm just not aware of better places. Thanks

Kamalau aka GM would be what you want then. They are a bit more pricey than Red ZZ though. But there are great ZZ fish out there, if your going to order it. Check up around Flowerhorncraze. I'm sure someone will there will know to point you in the right direction for getting frys from a high quality Red ZZ. I myself prefer Thai Red ZZ if I was to buy a Red ZZ. But other than that, a Kamfa will take at least 2 year, sometimes 3 to mature.
Over all, Red Dragon mature a lot faster and is much hardier than any FH out there.

Ok sounds like I'll be on the hunt for either kamalau or red zz, thanks for all the info.
